Kaka’ako Street Art

Yep...Too cool to care. HA!
Yep…Too cool to care. HA!

Last Friday, I took Lenore to Kaka’ako to enjoy the street art. Kaka’ako is the cool industrial/residential area downtown. They have this wonderful night market the third Saturday of every month where food vendors, bands and craftsmen come together for a night of fun. It’s crowded, loud, and awesome. Lenore loves it.

So after her HSA prep. class, we headed over to get some cool photographs for her personal blog and for the family comic project. The comic is coming along nicely, and here are some photos we hope to use. Of course we won’t use all of them. But we found a fun way to incorporate this amazing place into the story. Below are some of the comic shots.

I couldn’t stop snapping pictures, so here are some of the untouched shots from the visit. It really is a an amazing place. Happy Monday!

Update ‘N Dash!

Today Lenore has a three hour prep class for the upcoming HSA, so things are going to be moving fast in about an hour, and we’ll be gone most of the day.

Last night, the kids and I discussed some ideas for the first edition of of family comic. They agreed to do a story-board session with me this Saturday as long as there are some decent snacks. Easy enough…. I think the hard part will be getting some of these photos together. We’ll see.

In the meantime, here are some sample shots. Not sure what’s going to end up on the cutting room floor yet. Again, we’ll see. Lenore wants her character to be called “Night Mary” “Scary Mary”…which is her fun little take on ‘nightmare’. So that could work, unless the kids come up with something else. Her nemesis is “Ghost Girl”.

Have a fantastic Friday, all.

Our Comic Adventure Is Finally Happening

Sneak peek of our comic project!
Sneak peek of our comic project!

The girls and I are working on a comic adventure. It’s actually a story idea we had years ago, but it was too difficult for the girls, (and myself) to use the Photoshop techniques to give each photo that comic look. And since I can’t draw worth a damn, (like at all)….we were rather stuck.

But today I was just poking around, and found this great site: http://kusocartoon.com/photo-to-cartoon.php

It’s so much fun! And no…this is not some paid endorsement/sponsored post. My blog isn’t important enough to have a sponsored anything. I promise. But anyway, it’s so much fun!

So basically, the story is about a 10 yr. old girl who you call if you want your nightmare boogie-man to go away. She has the power to enter a kid’s dream and fight off their personal bad-guy, and she has all kinds of trinkets and charms that only work magic in the dream world. Usually she deals with teen-age dreams because if you’re still having nightmares by the time you’re a teen, this means it’s not just the run-of-the-mill imagination, and you need her help. During the day, our hero is just a normal kid who is trying to fit in with peer pressure, school, surfing, and guitar lessons. She’s kind of a loner, and has only a few close friends her age who she trusts.

We’re not sure how the baby works into the story, but Raven helps with the necessary charms/weapons needed to fight off the Boogie-Men. Alex helps too, because his Boogie Man was the first she (Lenore our hero) had to fight he brings her clients from high school.

So the girl fights off the monsters in other kid’s dreams, but she has trouble with her own dream monster, who will pop up every now and then. Every hero has a weakness, no? So we’ll see how this goes. In the meantime, here is a small sample of the photos from our first edition. I think I definitely need to play around with Lenore’s eye color, though. The final picture will look better.

I forgot to mention…because the girl has to fight off nightmares, she has to become a nightmare herself. So the girls and I decided to do all dream sequences like this.

Lenore in ‘Nightmare Mode’, ready to fight off the Boogie Men, and the stuff nightmares are made of.

This will take a couple of weeks to put together, but we’re having fun. I’ll share once we have something to show. Oh, and have fun with the link! We are. 🙂

LAX Weekend Recap

This week has been a log one. Since we home school the girls, there have been long days of testing and prep classes for the upcoming HSA. On top of that, there is still the additional curriculum, guitar practice, LAX practice and work-out sessions for all three of the older kiddos. Whew!

So this is the first chance I have had all week to sit at the computer and give a recap of last weekend.

Saturday was our turn to host the team from the Big Island. This means Jon and I were in charge of organizing the pot-luck after the game. We made the burgers and everyone else brought a side. It worked out wonderfully, and the boys, (and girls) from the Big Island are great kids.

But before we got to the game, we had to make Evangeline happy. It was hot, and she was less than thrilled with her shoes.

Once her shoes were off, there was the matter with the umbrella and chair. Not only was Lenore sitting in E’s chair, but she was holding E’s umbrella too. Not cool! Lenore was there first, so we let her sit until she got bored (it took like 7 minutes), and then she was off to play with some kids she met.

It was a good game. Our team won, and the kids really got along well. After a long hot 4 quarters, the kids got together for some group shots, and then headed to the shade of the trees for the food.

There was plenty food for the hungry teens, siblings, and adults. One of the amazing things about pot-lucks in Hawaii is how everyone always comes together to make it amazing. The kids sat together on the ground, and had a nice time. Alex had fun and the girls, especially Evangeline, found time to eat every dessert on the table. The brownies were the biggest hit.

It was a beautiful Saturday. The only thing missing was Raven. We had so much stuff to haul in the truck, there was literally no room for her to sit with a seat-belt. She didn’t mind, as she had free run of the house for the morning, however Raven was with us for the Sunday game. It was another hot beautiful afternoon, but no potluck followed. I think everyone was just tired. 🙂

Happy Friday Everyone!

LAX Weekend

As I type this, half the house is still asleep. We have a 2 day LAX tournament for Alex in town. We’re leaving in a couple of hours to head to the early game. A big pot-luck is to follow, and we’re hosting. I’ll be sure to take pictures of the boy in action.

Happy Saturday!
