Month: March 2015

Our “Day Off”

Today is Prince Kuhio Day on the island, so that means my son was home today. He spent the day tying up the family computer, playing some online game with his classmates. Ugh…

Raven is enrolled in an online charter school, and they too observe the holiday. She has spent the day catching up on her favorite shows on Netflix. Since I’m Lenore’s teacher, the poor kid had school. But it wasn’t so bad. She took some practice tests for the upcoming HSA, and they were pretty easy, so no worries there. She actually likes the testing. Crazy kid.

I don’t have a lot to blog about today. Lenore is working on the new drills from her teacher, and also working on some songs for the upcoming Open Mic. He has her trying her hand at Iron Maiden, and some other classics. In addition to her homework drills, she is working on another song of her own. She doesn’t have much, yet. I included a clip of one of her homework assignments and the start of her new song. They’re just a short glimpse into her progress, and she started them yesterday. Actual complete songs will be played next week for the Open Mic performance.

Evangeline has been in full “2 yr. old” mode all day. It’s good and not-so-good. The dentist trip was a disaster. I had to hold her in my lap as they looked at her baby teeth, and she screamed the entire time. Of course.

Happy Prince Kuhio Day!

Dentist Adventure?

We’ll see. It’s early in the morning here, and in a couple of hours I have to take all three girls to the dentist for their check-up. This should go fast, as the two older girls have never had a cavity–but we’re going to try to get Evangeline to open her mouth too. I’m not sure how well that’s going to go. Wait…yes I am, but I’m hoping for a different outcome.

Lenore has a lesson, so Raven and I will keep the baby entertained on the shore. After the lesson, we’re off to the dentist.

This should be an eventful morning.

Wish me luck!

It’s Totally A YouTube Monday

We’re back to school this week, and it’s going about as well as one would expect after a long holiday. I’m including an update of Lenore’s progress with a new song. She is working on “Wind Cries Mary”, by Jimmy Hendrix. This is a difficult song for her, but not as difficult as others she has played. So, she’ll get it eventually with the lyrics. And yes…the shot is blurry because Evangeline rubbed her sticky little hands all over the lens. I realized this after practice, but I didn’t have the heart to make Lenore practice again for the clips. (I did manage to clean the lens, though)…It’s totally a Monday.

I’m including some clips of her drill practice for those who want to see her progress:

We have a full week of school work, another guitar lesson for shredding-stuff, and all three girls have a dentist appointment on the other side of the island .

**I forgot to mention that Lenore is working very hard on 2 new songsto play for Open Mic. They are by one of her favorite bands, “Cage The Elephant”. We hope to have these by the next few months so she has something fresh for Open Mic night. Enjoy! She really wants to try her hand with a slide, so the first song will do nicely. The other one is just cool.

Girl Day!
Girl Day!

Today I took two of the three girls to the American Girl store at Ala Moana. Raven has been begging to go for a few weeks now. Originally, I had planned to take all three, but Lenore ditched us to go surfing on the West Coast with some friends. She came home about 30 minutes ago with some new beach treasures, and a sunburn.

This is the loot Lenore found while surfing. Pale green Sea Glass, and little broken bits of shells are the best treasure.

However, the baby DID go with us, and OH MY did she have fun! She loved looking at all of the dollies with their pets. We looked at every animal AG carries, and she wasn’t leaving without the dog Grace. I think she’s Kit’s puppy.

So it was a successful trip. Raven got to purchase some fun accessories for her doll (30% off all merchandise!), and look around the store. And the baby got to take home a cute puppy, and run around the store.

‘I Like You!’

Evangeline is a typical 2 yr. old who loves Daniel Tiger. Of course she knows all the songs. “I Like You”, happens to be one of her favorites. Here’s a short clip of Raven and Evangeline singing together. About halfway through the clip, Evangeline gets annoyed that Raven is singing with her, and decides to go it alone.

We’re not planning on driving anywhere today, however tomorrow is our big trek to the American Girl store in Ala Moana. Raven and Evangeline are definitely going, but Lenore is still undecided. She has an opportunity to go surfing early tomorrow morning and might hit the waves instead of the Mall. We’ll see.

Happy Wednesday!

Guitars And Crayons

I guess if we’re still counting months, Evangeline will officially be 25 months tomorrow. Do people count months after the age of 2? I never did with my other kids, and I find it a bit silly to say how many months she is at this point. So from here on out, no more counting by the month. I promise.

Yesterday was our first official day of Spring Break. We did nothing, and loved every minute of it. It was so nice to not drive anywhere. Along with her toys, Evangeline took advantage of play-time with her siblings. Because Alex and Raven are busy teens, she doesn’t get as much time with them. She also took advantage of the crayons.

And I would be remiss if I didn’t mention the guitar. Lately, Evangeline has played her guitar every day. Every. Single. Day. Lenore no longer uses the mini-Squire. It was packed away for some time, but Evangeline has shown an interest in Lenore’s guitar, so we brought it out. I’m so glad we did! She loves ‘her’ guitar. Who knows? She could take up playing like her big sis.

Whatever we do for the remainder of our Spring Break, I’m sure this little one will keep us busy.

Sledding In Paradise

Long climb for little legs.
Long climb for little legs.

Last week was crazy. It was the week leading up to Spring Break and we were swamped with finals and projects that had to be done before the quarter ended. One of those activities was Raven’s final pottery class in town. It was a two-hour class, and that means the younger girls and I had some time to kill. At Jon’s suggestion, we tried ‘sledding’ with cardboard in Kakaako.

It really wasn’t the right conditions to sled. The day was blustery and damp. Lenore didn’t have much speed to slide, as the grass was wet. Luckily there was lots of mud to keep Evangeline busy.

Her little shoes and socks were soaked by the time we left the hill.

Once Lenore ditched the sledding efforts, we trashed the cardboard and headed down to the ocean front. The water was very still and the girls could see some little fish in the shallow water.

We didn’t go down those stairs because I knew at least on of the girls would end up in the water. But the water was so clear, we could see the fish from the top of the stairs. The dog was trying to catch the fish with his paws. Evangeline loved every minute of it.

Once we could tear Evangeline away from the dog, Lenore walked her up and down the paved path. They found some feral cats in the rocks.

After 2 hours, I let the girls have one last look out over the water before we headed back to the car. We made it back to the car, removed wet shoes and socks, and headed out to retrieve Raven from pottery class. Evangeline was exhausted, and napped the entire ride home.

It was a nice way to kill some time last week, but I’m glad that week is over. This week is Spring Break and we’re not going to leave the house if we can help it.

Happy Monday!
